Does my student have to live on campus?
Students need prior approval from the Director of Residence Life to live off campus. Requests will be approved only if any of the following conditions are met – (1) the student resides with parents or a close relative within the city of Danville or within commuting distance; (2) the student has previously established residence in the city of Danville or immediate area while attending Danville Community College, Patrick Henry Community College, Piedmont Community College or Rockingham Community College; (3) the student has established residence in the city of Danville or the immediate area one year prior to enrolling at Averett; (4) the student has attained at least 90 semester hours of credit; (5) the student is married and/or has a minor child; (6) the student is 23 years of age or older; and (7) the student has served 180 consecutive days of active duty in the military (Reserve and National Guard members would not be eligible).
What should my student do if he/she doesn’t like his/her roommate?
All efforts are made to place your student with a compatible roommate at the beginning of the year. Realizing that the experience of adjusting to living with another person takes some time, the Residence Life Office asks that students wait three weeks to “try it out” before requesting a roommate change. During the third week of classes students may request to change their roommates. Students must talk with their resident assistant before setting up an appointment with the director of residence life who will explain the procedures for roommate change. Students changing rooms/apartments without approval from the Residence Life Office will be fined $100 for an illegal or unauthorized room change and may be required to move their belongings back to their original assigned room. A student who changes rooms illegally may be blocked from making another room change for the remainder of that semester. A student’s prior disciplinary record will be considered before granting roommate changes.
How can my student get a private room?
Private rooms are assigned on a first come first serve basis and depend upon enrollment. All of the rooms on Main Hall are single rooms with no additional single room fee. Students who want a single room have to fill out a housing form and pay in advance. Single rooms do cost more than double occupancy rooms.
How do I send mail to my student who lives on campus?
Students in Bishop, Danville, Davenport, Fugate and Main halls receive mail at the Mail Room in Main. Students living in the apartments will pick up mail in mailboxes located in the stairwell of each building. When addressing mail to students make sure that it has the following items: student name, Averett University, 420 West Main St., Box # (insert YOUR student’s box number here), Danville, VA 24541. Who should I contact if there is an emergency at home and I need to get in touch with my student?
If a student needs to be contacted during class hours, for emergency purposes only, family members may call the Student Development Office and ask that a student be given a message or return a phone call. The Student Development Office will do their best to contact the student and see they get the message. It is suggested that family members have information on where a commuter student can be reached during the times the student is at the university but not in class.
During the day call the Dean of Students at 1-800-AVERETT, Ext. 5621.
In the evening call Security (from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.) 1-800-AVERETT, Ext. 5888.

What should my student do if items are stolen from his/her room?
If your student discovers that he/she has items missing from the dorm room call campus security first. Then call the director of residence life. Averett recommends that student’s have renter’s insurance to protect them from the chance of theft. Students should keep their doors locked whenever they are not in their room.
Will my student need health insurance?

Students should be covered either with their own policy, through their family’s policy, or through Clarendon Insurance Company (Best’s rating: A-Excellent) prior to enrollment. Information packets can be obtained through Averett’s Student Development Office.
