Dr. Carol Meyers is a faculty member in Duke University’s department of religion. Her specialties are Biblical studies and archaeology, and she is a prominent scholar in the study of women in the Biblical world. She has authored or co-authored eight books and has edited or co-edited five others. Meyers co-directs Duke’s summer in Israel program, and she is an affiliated faculty member of Duke’s Women’s Studies Program.

Adults $8, students/senior citizens $6 “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” brings to life the four-time Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series “Schoolhouse Rock.” The cartoon series, which taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever songs, has made its way to the stage where Tom, a school teacher who’s nervous about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching TV. As he watches, various characters emerge and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. The production features such beloved songs as “Conjunction Junction,” “Three is a Magic Number” and “Just A Bill.”

The Richmond Ballet will be performing American Masterpieces of Dance during its Averett appearance. It includes pieces from “After Eden” (John Butler), “Who Cares?” (Balanchine), “Allegro Brillante” (Balanchine), and “Inconsequentials” (de Mille). The Richmond Ballet was formed in 1957 by local dance enthusiasts as a performance outlet for students in local dance programs. It became the first professional ballet company in Virginia in 1984.

“The Laramie Project”

“The Laramie Project” was born out of the brutal and savage murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998. In the year and a half following the murder, Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project interviewed more than 200 residents of Laramie, Wyo. to create what is now known as “The Laramie Project.” The production chronicles the life of Laramie in the year after the murder, using eight actors to embody the more than 60 different people who were interviewed.

Nikki Giovanni, poet, author and educator
“Racism 101” 7:30 p.m. Pritchett Auditorium Free (no ticket required) A world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator, Giovanni will be discussing her book “Racism 101,” which is a collection of essays about the situation of Americans on all sides of various race issues. Giovanni has written more than two-dozen books, including volumes of poetry, illustrated children’s books and three collections of essays. Her three most recent volumes of poetry, “Love Poems,” “Blues: For All the Changes” and “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea” were winners of the NAACP Image Award in 1998, 2000 and 2003.

“Our Town”

Written by Thornton Wilder, “Our Town” is set in the fictional Grover’s Corners, N.H. “Our Town” tells the story of the Gibbs and Webb families – specially the story of Emily Webb and George Gibbs who fall in love and get married. “Our Town” eventually won Wilder his second Pulitzer Prize and went on to become one of the most popular American plays of the 20 th century.

Katherine Meadows and Sheryl Lee, pianists
The Julian and Elnora Light Memorial Concert 7:30 p.m. Pritchett Auditorium Free (no ticket required) Former Danville resident Katherine Meadows had extensive formal training at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, North Carolina School of the Arts and New York University. She has performed throughout New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Connecticut. Meadows has worked with such distinguished artists as Clifton Matthews, Gregory Haimovsky, Gwendolyn Toth and Miyoko Lotto.
Canadian pianist Sheryl Lee began her piano studies at the age of four. She made her orchestral debut with the Utah Symphony under the baton of Joseph Silverstein at age 12. She studied at New York University, University of Southern California and Yale University. Lee has worked with a number of artists including Peter Frankl, Hamish Milne, Lee Kum Sing and Miyoko Lotto.

Blount Chapel
Blount Chapel is located in the breezeway of Frith Hall, which is adjacent to Jordan Common. To get to the chapel from Mountain View Avenue go down the outside stairs of Frith Hall, taking a left at the bottom and entering through the archway. The chapel seats 170 people. Parking for Blount Chapel can be found along Mountain View Avenue, at Alumni Hall or in the lower level parking lot located off of Woodland Drive.
Pritchett Auditorium
Pritchett Auditorium is directly across from Forest Hills Elementary School on Mountain View Avenue. The auditorium seats 630 people. Parking for Pritchett Auditorium can be found along Mountain View Avenue, at Alumni Hall or in the lower level parking lot located off of Woodland Drive.
Averett Players' Tickets
Tickets for Averett Players’ productions may be purchased in advance or on the night of the show from the Pritchett Auditorium Box Office 791-5712. Seating is general admission. Season tickets for Averett Players’ productions may be purchased for $20 (adults) or $15 (senior citizens and students). Averett Players’ performances are not part of the Concert-Lecture Series.
