6: Retrieve Articles
Your successful database searches will identify a mix of full text articles and citations with abstracts. |
Each full text database offers a way to format articles for saving to disk or printing in HTML or PDF format. PDF is preferred for your references because it is formatted exactly like the original publication, making it easy to cite page numbers. PDF also includes illustrations and tables sometimes omitted from the HTML version. You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print PDF documents. |
Scan Abstracts and Descriptors
To determine whether a cited article is relevant to your topic, scan the abstract provided on the list of articles or click on "full record" to view the abstract and citation details. Subject headings or "descriptors" are also clues to the subject matter of the article. A descriptor will often lead to articles on a particular aspect of the topic. |
For cited articles not available in full text, look for "Article Linker" or "Find it at Averett," which appear on the list of articles or at the bottom of the full record display. Many of the library's subscription databases are "OpenURL compliant," enabling you to browse to the article in another database or link directly to it.
