Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 under the leadership of well-known writer Sara Paretsky.  Its purpose was to promote the professional advancement of women writers of mystery fiction and to unite readers, booksellers, agents, and publishers into a knowledgeable unit.  Its mission has not changed.  Today the organization assists in networking, advising, and supporting women writers in this genre.  Currently, Sisters in Crime has a membership of approximately 3400 individuals in fifty states, Canada, Australia, Germany, and England.
