Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 under the leadership of well-known writer Sara Paretsky. Its purpose was to promote the professional advancement of women writers of mystery fiction and to unite readers, booksellers, agents, and publishers into a knowledgeable unit. Its mission has not changed. Today the organization assists in networking, advising, and supporting women writers in this genre. Currently, Sisters in Crime has a membership of approximately 3400 individuals in fifty states, Canada, Australia, Germany, and England.
