Grants
Unlike loans, grants do not have to be repaid. Grants are usually awarded to students with the fewest financial resources and are considered need-based aid. The federal government determines this need when you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Grants usually come from federal and state governments and are sent directly to the school.
Pell Grant
Undergraduate students with proven financial need may be eligible. The amount of this award is up to $4,050. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
Full-time 1st or 2nd year undergraduate students. The student must be a U.S. citizen and a Federal Pell Grant recipient. The student must have completed rigorous high school program (rigorous defined by each state). The amount of the award for the 1st year is $750 and the 2nd year is $1300 with a 3.0 GPA.
National SMART Grant
Full-time third and fourth year undergraduate students. The student must be a U.S. citizen and a Federal Pell Grant recipient. The student must be enrolled in an eligible major: Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Designated Critical or Foreign Languages. The amount of the award is $4000 for the third and fourth year of study. The student must maintain a 3.00 GPA.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
Full-time or half-time undergraduate students with exceptional financial need who could not attend university otherwise are eligible. The amount of this award varies from $200-$2,000 depending on need. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
College Scholarship Assistance Program (CSAP)
Virginia residents with proven financial need are eligible to be considered for this grant. The amount of this award varies from $400 to $1000. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to determine eligibility for CSAP.
Averett University Assistance Grant
Full-time undergraduate students with proven financial need are eligible. The amount of this award is up to $5,500. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Averett Award
This is a non need-based incentive grant for full-time first-time/transfer students whose legal residency is outside of North Carolina and Virginia. To apply, just fill out an Averett Admissions Application. This grant is renewable.
North Carolina Award
This is an incentive grant for full-time students whose legal residency is North Carolina. To apply, just fill out an Averett Admissions Application. The priority deadline is April 1. This grant is renewable.
Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)
Full-time domicile residents of Virginia attending a private university in Virginia may be considered for this award. The amount of this award during the 2006-07 school year was $2,700. The amounts are determined by the General Assembly of Virginia. To apply, obtain an application from the Financial Aid Office at Averett University. A downloadable version of the application is also available. Complete this form and return it to Averett before the deadline date of July 31.
Ministerial Tuition Discounts
Full-time students who are sons or daughters of ministers or students preparing for church-related vocations are eligible for this discount. The amount of this award is $400 for resident students and $200 for commuting students. The priority deadline is April 1. Students will be eligible to renew this award by maintaining good academic standards.
Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded based on criteria such as academic achievement, cultural or religious background, or special skills and talents. Unlike grants, you often need to apply separately.
Scholarships usually require full-time enrollment. If you receive a private scholarship that does not require full-time enrollment, the Office of Financial Aid must receive written authorization from the donor before disbursement will occur.
Trustee Scholarship
Entering full-time freshmen may qualify for this competitive full tuition scholarship based on high school GPA, curriculum, SAT or ACT scores, and extracurricular activities. To be considered for the Trustee Scholarship, students must meet the minimum criteria: 3.50 grade point average and a 1250 SAT or 28 ACT. Awards are renewable in subsequent years if the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
To apply, complete an admissions application for Averett. All Trustee applicants must be accepted to the university prior to February 15, 2007. The Scholarship Committee will review all files and notify finalists by March 1, 2007. Finalists and their families will be invited to campus on Saturday, March 17, 2007 from 11am - 2pm for a required interview with selected faculty members. The Trustee Scholarship recipient will be announced the following week.
Averett Scholarships and Awards
Entering full-time students who demonstrate academic achievement are considered for these awards. The amounts vary from $2,500 to $10,000 according to the student's cumulative GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Scholarships are renewable in subsequent years if the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and their current full-time enrollment status. Grants are renewable by maintaining good academic standards and their current full-time enrollment status. To apply, complete an Averett Admissions Application before the April 1 priority deadline.
Graduate of Merit Scholarship
Pittsylvania County Graduates of Merit may qualify for a scholarship in the amount of $500 per year to attend Averett. To learn more about how you can become a Pittsylvania County Graduate of Merit visit PSCB Graduate of Merit Program. Private Scholarships

Loans
Student loans are sources of financial aid, which must be repaid at a future time. Averett will offer you loans after we have reviewed your eligibility for grants, scholarships, and work-study. Loans are considered self-help financial aid because you must repay the money loaned to you. Student loan programs offer favorable terms reserved for students. Interest rates are lower than typical consumer rates. You may have an interest-free grace period before repayment begins. Some loans may be deferred or repaid if you work in a particular program or government job after graduation.
Perkins Loan
Full-time or half-time undergraduate students with proven financial need are eligible. The amount of this loan is up to $4,000. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Stafford Student Loan
Full-time or half-time students may qualify for this low-interest educational loan. The amount of this loan is up to $3,500 for Freshmen; $4,500 for Sophomores; and $5,500 for Juniors and Seniors. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Also, obtain a loan application from a lender of your choice that participates in the Federal Stafford Loan program, complete it, and send the loan application to the Financial Aid Office at Averett University.
Grad PLUS Loan for Graduate and Professional Students
With a Grad PLUS loan, graduate and professional students enrolled at least half time can borrow up to the total cost of education, less other financial aid received. New loans issued beginning July 1, 2006 will have a fixed interest rate of just 8.5%.
To qualify for a Graduate PLUS loan, you must
- Be enrolled graduate level programs only;
- File the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid);
- Accept all Stafford Student Loan funds you are eligible to receive;
Pass a simple credit check.
Parents Loan to Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
Parents of dependent students who do not qualify for need-based aid or who need additional funds to supplement need-based aid is eligible. The amount of this loan is variable (up to the cost of education minus all other financial aid.)
Student Employment
In order to work under Federal Work Study Program, students must submit a FAFSA and meet eligibility requirements. To find out if you are eligible, contact the Office of Financial Aid.
Federal Work Study (FWS)
Full-time or half-time undergraduate students with proven financial need are eligible for Federal Work Study. You will be paid the federal minimum wage for the number of hours worked at jobs on campus that encourage community service work and generally work related to your course of study. Other Aid
You must report additional aid sources not awarded by the Office of Financial Aid. You can report these sources by notifying our office. Your financial aid package may be adjusted if you receive additional scholarships or assistance from any Outside Agency.
Payment Plans
This plan is designed to let you manage your cash payments to Averett University. Averett has partnered with Academic Management Services. This plan allows for interest free payments of tuition balances over a seven to ten month period. The annual fee to enroll is $55.
