Federal Work Study The Program:
The Federal Work-Study Program provides jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.
Application Procedures:
You must complete the FAFSA by the priority deadline and mark 'yes' to the question on the FAFSA that asks you if you are interested in student employment. The processor must receive the FAFSA by April 1 to meet the priority deadline, as funds are limited. The results of the FAFSA must show financial need to qualify for work-study.
Compensation:
Federal Work-Study wages will be at least the current federal minimum wage, but it may be higher, depending on the type of work and the skills required. A student's total Federal Work-Study award depends on when they apply, their level of need, and the funding level of Averett University.
Undergraduates and Graduates are paid by the hour. No Federal Work-Study student may be paid by commission or fee. Averett must pay work-study students at least once a month. The money may also be used to pay for institutional charges such as tuition, fees, and room and board.
Hours:
The FWS program can start and end anytime throughout the fiscal year which is July 1-June 30. If you are eligible to continue working under the program, you may work until your maximum award is met or until June 30th of the following year, whichever is first. Earnings from Work-Study can't exceed the total Federal Work-Study award. When assigning work hours, an employer or financial aid administrator will consider the student's class schedule and his/her academic progress.
NOTE: Work-Study does not mean the student is paid for studying! Work-Study students must apply for a job, and satisfy the employer's requirements to be hired and maintain the job. Click here for Work-Study forms.
