Satisfactory Academic Progress
Eligibility for federally sponsored financial aid shall be determined by both qualitative and quantitative criteria as defined below:
Qualitative Standards
During the first two years of attendance, including transfer work, a student must not have a quality point deficiency, which would require an academic suspension after reviewed by the academic policies committee.
At the end of the second academic year (measured as a period of time, not by student grade level), the student must, in general, have a C average or its equivalent. However, the Averett University financial aid policy permits students who have less than a 2.0, but are progressing toward the graduation requirement, to receive Federal aid if their cumulative GPA does not result in academic suspension by the academic policies committee. Students may also receive private, institutional and state aid not governed by other specific GPA requirements.
Quantitative Standards
Associate degree: The maximum time for a full-time student to complete the Associate degree shall be a 150% of the published length of the program measured in academic years. Also, a student shall have earned the following minimum number of hours at the conclusion of each academic year (measured as a period of time, not by the student = s grade level) of attendance at Averett.
* Includes hours transferred in to Averett University.
First......................18 semester hours (60%)
Second..................39 semester hours (70%)
Students who attend half time are expected to complete one-half of the requirements for full-time students.
Bachelor's degree : The maximum time for a full-time student to complete a bachelor's degree shall be a 150% of the published length of the program measured in academic years. Also, a student shall have earned the following minimum number of hours at the conclusion of each academic year (measured as a period of time, not by the student = s grade level) of attendance at Averett.
* Includes hours transferred in to Averett University.
First.....................18 semester hours (60%)
Second.................39 semester hours (65%)
Third....................60 semester hours (67%)
Fourth..................81 semester hours (67%)
Fifth....................102 semester hours (83%)
Quantitative standards are reviewed at the end of each student = s academic year (measured as a period of time, not by the student = s grade level) of attendance at Averett.
Financial Aid Probation
Students who are placed of either academic probation and/or considered for academic suspension will also be placed on financial aid probation. Note: If quantitative standards are not met, students are placed on academic suspension.
Financial Aid Suspension
Students who are academically suspended or do not meet the quantitative financial aid standards (reviewed at the end of the students academic year) will be placed on financial aid suspension.
Withdrawal from course
Students who withdraw from a course will be evaluated for satisfactory academic progress in accordance with the academic record that results. Therefore, courses for which grades of (WF) are counted as hours attempted and are treated as though the grade were an F.
Incompletes
A grade of incomplete (I) is counted in hours attempted for federal financial aid purposes.
Repeat Courses
The first five courses, which are, repeated result in the removal of the first attempt(s) from the computations in the student's academic record although they still appear in the record. Consequently, the hours attempted, grade point averages, and hours earned are removed when the new grade is recorded.
Only the new grade is considered in satisfactory academic progress evaluations.
Fundamental Courses
These courses (English 100 and Math 100) are not included in calculations of grade point average (qualitative) nor are they included in the (quantitative) criteria for satisfactory academic progress or graduation.
Appeal Process
If a student wishes to appeal the decision of not making satisfactory academic progress, (s) he must write to the Financial Aid Committee explaining why (s) he feels a waiver is warranted. The only situations that will be reviewed by the committee are illness of the student, death in the immediate family, or undue hardships in the family. The decision of the committee is final.
