Staff and Faculty FAQ's

Q. How can I make changes/updates/corrections on our web site?
A. Whether you need a simple text changes or entire pages added/deleted, you must go through the Computer Center. You may wish to review our web policies and style guide. Contact the WebMaster at webmaster@averett.edu .

Q. How do I set up/retrieve my voice mail? .
A. There is a step-by-step tutorial here.

Q: "I have lost the one of my network drives (ie. H:,G:,Z:, etc.), how do I get them back?"
A: If you know the mapping to the area of the network you are trying to get to, then all you need to do is right click on My Network Places (or Network Neighborhood on Windows 98). In the menu that pops up, you should see the command map network drive. Click on that and then select the drive letter that you wish your mapping to have (ie. H:,G:,Z:, etc.) and then type in the folder or path to the area of the network you wish that drive letter to stand for. For example, usually the H: drive points to \\au-cc-fs\users. Also make sure the check box is checked so that it will reconnect when you reboot. Click OK and you should retain the mapping when you reboot. The most common mappings are \\au-cc-fs\users and \\peach\busforms.

Q: "How do I backup my Outlook E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar?"
A: There is a "how to" guide here. This will only backup the mail, contacts, and dates up to the point that you performed the backup. It is always nice to have one incase your outlook is corrupted and you lose your e-mail. Note that if your hard drive goes bad then the backup is most likely gone as well, so if you have a cd-burner this would be a good use for it. You could also place the file in your folder on the network. Please be careful to the volume of messages you are backing up. These files can be huge if you have thousands of messages. Please go through and clean out old messages and empty the Deleted Items Folder before creating a backup to save time and space.

Q: "Norton came up and said it caught a virus, am I infected?"
A: No, Norton has quarantined the virus from the e-mail or other method of infection. The virus did not spread. To prevent this from happening when you are trying to delete a message you know is infected, turn off the preview pane in outlook by right clicking on it and clicking the icon that says preview pane and it should disappear.

Q: "I keep getting returned mail I did not send, messages from people i have never heard from, or messages with generic titles like Hi, Your Details, Resume, Here's that file, etc. Is my machine infected with a virus or is theirs?"
A: Probably neither. The modern computer virus can randomly pick a name from the list of contacts of an infected machine and send itself to that address using any other address in the infected machines address book. Some even come as messages from Administration, Web Master, or Post Master and appear to be authentic messages. Some even pose as messages from Microsoft itself. The BEST defense against viruses like these are to contact the person sending you the message and ask them if they sent you the file. Note also that companies like Microsoft, Norton, and McAfee will never send you a file by e-mail without your prior knowledge of the message. If you are concerned about a message please contact the Computer Center at 5720 about it before opening it.

Q: "I think I may have a virus, how do I scan my computer?"
A: Click the Start button and go to Programs, Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and click the icon labeled the same as the folder name. On the left side of the box that should pop up is a picture of a drive that says Scan Computer beside it, click on it. The right side of the box now lists the drives on your system. Check the drives you wish to scan, however you should probably only be doing the C: drive because the others are probably network drives and have their own versions of norton that scan periodically. Check the box next to C: (or the other drives you wish to scan) and then click Scan. The scan will probably take about 20 minutes and will list any and all infected files it finds.
