How to configure LDAP Server to search for e-mail
addresses
1. Open Microsoft Outlook, if necessary.
2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts
3. In the resulting window, select Add and then Directory
Service
4. In the wizard enter our LDAP server name:
ldap.averett.edu
5. Click Next in the wizard
6. Answer NO when asked if you want to check e-mail addresses
against this service. Answering yes to this item will slow down your mail significantly.
7. Click Next and then Finish to return to
the Accounts window.
8. Click on the Directory tab and you should see an entry
labled ldap.averett.edu
9. Now, set the properties of your LDAP search engine by selecting the ldap
entry and click on PApril 8, 2005 4:33 PM appear with its
name selected.
11. Type over the ldap.averett.edu entry, replacing it with
something like Averett Directory.
12. Leave the Server Name field UNCHANGED. It should read
ldap.averett.edu.
13. Click on the Advanced tab in the properties window.
14. Enter the Search Base for Averett:
dc=averett;dc=edu.
Use no capital letters or spaces in the search base entry.
15. Your LDAP server will be configured as soon as you click OK
16. To use LDAP for finding addresses, open Outlook and select
Tools -> AddressBook -> Find People. In the panel that
appears, adjust the Look in drop-down to Averett Directory. This will be set
for you the next time you try to find people.
17. Enter a name or partial name and go from there. For faculty and staff you
will be able to locate phone and office locations in addition to an e-mail address.
It is also possible to enter an e-mail address and find the name of the person
who owns that address. Note that the LDAP directory is not the same as your
personal address book entries
and will not replace your Contacts list.
