About the Coach
The 2004 season marks the 10th year of Averett University volleyball under the guidance of Danny Miller. In his first nine years, Miller has led the Cougars to a 242-106 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He also has won six conference tournament titles and seven regular season crowns.
Miller has raised the bar in the USA South, while his teams have posted victories in 70 percent of their contests. He ranks in the top-20 among active division III coaches in career winning percentage. Most remarkable about that feat is the fact that he has done it against some of the top teams in the nation.
In conference play, Miller’s resume is second to none. He has a career record of 106-10 in conference play through his first nine years. Miller has won 91 percent of his league games and has posted no fewer than 11 league victories in a season. In 2003 he set a school record with 15 conference wins, the most of any team in the USA South Conference’s stellar history.
Miller manages to put great teams on the court year in and year out. He wins with young squads and with veterans. Miller is Averett’s winningest coach and has been named the USA South Conference Coach of the Year six times, as well as the Virginia State Coach of the Year five. He coached and recruited Averett’s only All-American in volleyball and has developed six conference players of the year.
Last season Miller’s team consisted of two senior starters. The other four starters included two sophomores, a junior and a freshman. He guided that team of players with limited experience to a 31-10 mark, tying the school record for wins in a season, and a conference championship. The Cougars won the regular season, at 15-1 in conference play, and the tournament titles. The tournament championship earned Averett its third trip to the NCAA Tournament where they dropped a heartbreaker in four games to Washington & Lee in San Antonio. TX.
Before his record-setting head coaching career began in 1995, Miller served as an assistant on the Averett staff from 1990-94. He holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Averett and also serves as the university’s compliance coordinator and head women’s tennis coach. Miller and his wife Ruth reside in Danville with their daughter McKenzie.
