About the Coach

Head Coach Kathy Bocock

Kathy Bocock is entering her 13th season as the head women’s basketball coach at Averett University.

During her first season in 1992, Bocock inherited a team that had only 30 wins in the program’s nine-year history as a member of the NCAA. She managed to more than double that total in her first five seasons on the job. In fact, during the 1996-97 campaign, Bocock led the Cougars to their first winning season. Averett posted a mark of 13-12 that year, including a 6-6 standing in the strong USA South Conference (formerly the Dixie). It was also the first time an Averett team tallied double figures in wins during a season at the NCAA level.

The following year Bocock directed Averett to a 10-14 record, giving her an unprecedented back-to-back seasons with double-figure win totals. It was a feat that the Averett women’s basketball program had never reached as a member of the NCAA. The Cougars also posted their second consecutive 6-6 conference mark, which was also an Averett first.

Throughout her coaching career, Bocock has developed many all-conference players and has had a pair of Cougars named Rookie of the Year in the USA South Conference. Her most recent Rookie of the Year honoree came during the 2001-02 season, when Lakisha Jones was selected for the award.

In the middle of a rebuilding stage, Bocock’s crew showed signs of brilliance in 2003-04, as she guided the Cougars to a sweep of the defending conference champions, Methodist College. Although the Cougars finished at 4-22, 10 of those losses were by less than 10 points and six by five or less. Consider that the Cougars started three sophomores that season, and one can easily see that the future is bright for Averett.

Bocock also serves as the head softball coach at Averett, as well as the athletics department’s senior women’s administrator. Bocock has guided her softball team to five consecutive 20-win seasons, a 2004 USA South Conference Tournament Championship, and a 2004 NCAA Tournament berth.

Bocock is a two-year letterwinner and a 1986 graduate of Ferrum College. Prior to Ferrum, she played at Radford University at the NCAA Division I level. Before coming to Averett, Bocock served as an assistant at both Roanoke College and Ferrum. She currently resides in Danville, VA.
