About the Coach
Jim Gourlay, a native of Canada, attended Ulster County Community College in New York where he received first team All-America honors in soccer and was one of the top scorers in the nation in 1986. He continued his education at UNC-Chapel Hill where he completed his undergraduate degree in biology and was a member of the most successful team in Carolina history. In 1987, UNC-Chapel Hill won their first ever ACC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Gourlay played soccer professionally for the Raleigh Flyers and Raleigh United in 1993 and 1994 respectively.
Coach Gourlay became involved in coaching at the high school level before moving on to collegiate soccer. He served as assistant coach for Duke University in 1994-95 and helped with both the men's and women's soccer program at UNC-Chapel Hill. Gourlay came to Averett in 1995 as head soccer coach.
