About the Squad
College cheerleading has entered a new era. Cheerleading today is much more than pretty girls jumping up and down. It requires women and men of strength, endurance, and power who embody school pride, and promote school spirit. Cheerleaders are athletes, motivators, and leaders with a sense of discipline that carries over into life. The Averett University Cheerleading Squad reflects the modern cheerleader in every sense of the word.
The Averett University Cheerleading Squad has made great strides in the past ten years. We have gone from being a small all-female squad cheering for a few basketball games to a large co-ed squad competing nationally. In 1998 the Averett Cheerleading Program was recognized by the National Cheerleaders Association as one of the top 1,000 (out of 75,000) competitive cheerleading programs in the nation!
Averett's cheerleading squad helps to support and inspire winning athletic teams. To prepare for the football season, cheerleaders begin conditioning and practice late in the summer. In early October we offer a camp to area elementary, middle and high school cheerleaders.
Averett cheerleaders cheer for football and both men's and women's basketball games. At the same time we are preparing for our own competition. In early April, we journey to Florida for the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Championships. We are one of a few Division III schools to compete, so we are grouped with division II schools. In 1998, we were eighth in our Division; this year we hope to make the finals. We have also competed in the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Cheerleading National Championship.
The new 70-acre athletic complex provides the university's athletic teams including the Averett Cheerleading Squad the benefit of some of the finest facilities in Division III athletics.
Committed to providing an environment for the growth and development of the whole person, the university recognizes that athletic endeavors and academic pursuits should complement each other. Students who participate in cheerleading are expected to be full-time students working on an academic degree. Thus, it is the goal of the university that the student-athlete experience success in academics as well as in athletics. Cheerleaders major in many different subjects from aviation, art, business, education, criminal justice, music, psychology, and physical education, and are involved in many other campus activities such as Averett Singers, Baptist Student Union, Student Government, and Residence Life.
The Averett University Cheerleading Squad offers a rich tradition of excellence in scholarship, sportsmanship, and leadership.
Last season's update
In addition to cheering for the university’s athletic teams, last year the squad competed in two university championships. In January, we traveled to Orlando, Florida for the UCA College Cheerleading National Championship. In April, we journeyed to Daytona Beach, Florida for the NCA (http://www.ncacheer.com) Collegiate National Championship.
