Admission Requirements

Averett operates on the "rolling admissions" system. Completed applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee, and candidates will be notified of a decision approximately two weeks after receipt of all necessary supporting documents. Requirements for incoming freshmen, international students, transfer students and readmissions are listed below.

Incoming Freshmen:

  • A completed application for admission. This application may be completed online or you may request that a paper application be mailed to you.
  • SAT scores (Averett's code is 5017) or ACT scores (Averett's code is 4338).
  • A transcript of credits completed, or in progress, from high school. All entering students should have satisfactorily completed at least 15 academic units in secondary school including at least 4 in English, 5 in mathematics and sciences (Algebra I and Algebra II or Geometry, and 2 lab sciences), 3 in history and social sciences, and electives (foreign language is recommended). Students who have completed the GED may be considered for admission.
  • A letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor, teacher, employer, or principal is recommended.
For Fall 2007 applicants - 3 math units and 3 lab sciences will be required for admission.

Transfer Students:
  • A completed application for admission. This application may be completed online.
  • A transcript of credits completed, or in progress, from all previously attended colleges/universities.
  • A letter of recommendation is recommended.
  • Complete a Confidential Inquiry for Transfer Applicants form

Transfer students should be in good standing with their previous university and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Courses from an accredited university, applicable to Averett's curriculum with a grade of C or better, are transferable. All credits usually transfer with an associate degree from an accredited two-year university.

Transfer students who have completed less then 12 credit hours must complete the entrance requirements of both an incoming freshman and transfer student. Students who have completed college work while still in high school shall not be considered transfer students. These students will be evaluated as incoming freshmen.

Complete an online application or request that a paper application be mailed to you.

International Students:

In addition to the entrance requirements for incoming freshmen, international students must take the TOEFL and achieve a score of 500 or greater (173 on the computer version). Please contact Stephanie Mullins, International Student Counselor, at smullins@averett.edu or 434-791-4996 for questions regarding International Admissions.

Readmission:

Any student who:

1. has attended Averett as a degree-seeking student and
2. has withdrawn, been granted a leave of absence, or not returned for the next regular semester and
3. would like to be readmitted to Averett

MUST complete an application for readmission through the Registrar’s Office.

A student who attends another college and then seeks readmission to Averett must reapply through the Registrar’s Office. An official record of all college-level work taken since leaving Averett should accompany this request for readmission. Students who were in good standing when they left Averett are subject to the same admissions criteria as transfer students.

A student seeking readmission after being on academic or social suspension for one semester must submit a written request for readmission to the Academic Policies Council. The letter should be sent to the dean of arts and sciences at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the term for which the student is seeking readmission.

A student who has been placed on academic suspension and who is readmitted is readmitted under the conditions of extended probation. Also, any student who was on academic warning or probation at the time of withdrawal from the university and who is subsequently readmitted will be readmitted with the same status which was in effect at the time of withdrawal.
