The Equestrian Studies Department’s objectives are to produce graduates with a broad base of knowledge in horsemanship, an attitude of professionalism, and provide a gateway into the equine industry.

Students interested in management positions within the equestrian industry benefit from Averett's innovative business program offerings. In addition, students may expand their career options by combining equestrian studies with an additional major or minor — giving students the flexibility to create a degree program that best meets their career goals. An Equestrian Studies minor is offered for students who wish to specialize in another area of study while continuing their equestrian training.

Students are offered the experience of clinics, workshops and seminars in addition to classes.  Participation in shows, intercollegiate competitions, combined tests, horse trials, trek, and drill-rides is available to students who have shown satisfactory improvement.  Self-motivation and athleticism are necessary for ES students to succeed.  Guidance for specialized certification or post-graduate education is offered.

Possible career choices include equine insurance; pharmaceutical or equipment sales; design and/or construction of barns, courses, or facilities; equine massage; chiropractic; tourism; training; teaching; equine journalism; ownership/management of tack or feed stores; and racing, showing, boarding, or breeding stables.

Incoming freshmen are required to take a riding test and will be placed, according to their experience, into one of the Horsemastership courses.  Students must attain a minimum GPA for 2.50 for all courses in the major or minor.  In addition, ES majors must pass a departmental exit exam in order to graduate.

A student who would like to visit with the the Director of the Equestrian Studies program or a member of her staff should notify an admissions representative at least two weeks in advance of the campus visit.

Feel free to e-mail or call the Admissions Office at 1-800-283-7388 to make the request or visit the Meet your Admissions Counselor link to determine which admissions counselor serves your area.
